Plan for movie success by managing your schedule and budget
By James Beswick
This should be essential reading for any planning to make a film and it's one of the few books I've ever read that focuses on the lifeblood of the project - the money. The material should be applicable to almost any size of project from a few thousands dollars upwards since the principals of organization, budgeting and resource allocation apply the same. It's not just the epic studio pictures that suffer from spiraling budgets and missed deadlines.
While I may never make a film, I think the method shown by the author is extremely logical. It shows how to approach a script, break down each scene and work out what resources are needed (location, actors, production crew, props, etc.) and calculate the shooting time. Surprisingly, it also budgets for post-production marketing, websites, promotions and all the things that many crews forget are all part of the cost of making a movie.
With a very easy to read style, anyone embarking on the epic task of producing or directing a film would be well advised to read this book and avoid many of the project-killing pitfalls along the way.

Production management from A to Z
By Jerry Saperstein
A billion million years ago, I made non-theatrical films for sales training, fundraising and similar purposes. They didn't require much in the way of budgeting, my scale was so small I didn't attract the attention of unions and I learned by doing. I edited on a rented Moviola set up in my bedroom.
Today the market for film and video is vastly larger, employing tens of thousands of people and demanding a wide variety of skills, one of them being production management.
The authors of this textbook define production management as "[t]he planning, organizing and managing of the resources and actions required to successfully create a film from a concept or script". Though the authors point out that the producer or director in smaller units may be called upon to act as production manager, this book seems more oriented to a person for whom production management is their primary job.
The book is clearly intended to be a classroom text, though it will also serve as the foundation for independent study as well.
It is excruciatingly thorough, with detailed explanations of every step of the production process. There are helpful Rule Of Thumb tips and even "CYA" pointers intended to help the beginner avoid common pitfalls.
There is a huge amount of detail here, much of it fascinating to moviemaker and non-moviemaker alike. Did you know, for example, that "animal actors" are part of the Teamster union, as are the wranglers who handle them? Did you know what the Animal Humane Society rules are?
It's unlikely that I will ever produce anything more than short one or two person talking-head videos in the future. Still, this book was a fun read, very informative and I learned quite a bit about production management.

FINALLY!
By Christina Paul
No matter where you are, or what your function is in filmmaking, "Scheduling and Budgeting Your Film: A Pain Free Guide" by Paula Landry is a book that makes going through and understanding the process very accessible. Knowing your costs, what things you will need in any film project is an absolute MUST, no matter if you want to get funding or even have a succesful self-made project on a shoestring. Filmmaking is the most technical of the arts, and it is also the most gruelling from copyright and perimissions. Those permissions, from showing clips of previously shot footage to getting the permits for a shoot and following the guidelines of various unions are things you cannot overlook. Landry has overlooked nothing as far as the factors that do affect the cost of making a film. It doesn't matter if you are making a feature film or a documentary, every producer, director or production manager needs a copy of this book.
Covered in the text are Scheduleing and Budget basics: Just what IS production management and how does the schdeule and the budget relate to one another? Landry walks you through several types of tools and software and gives a good synopsis of using both manual and computer approaches in the budgeting process. Full examples of all breakdwon forms, organizing resources, distribution expenses, hiden costs, as well as getting the pricing, setting priorities, finding both industry and state incentives for filmakers as well as keeping below the line and above the line costs within budget are covered.
This is the kind of book that should be used as a textbook in film school and something I wished that I had even when I was executive producer of our student production team. It's never too soon to learn all of the considerations of cost when making a film and Landry covers it succinctly and completely.
