This was my first time reading Taylor and I have to say it was just ok. It is interesting at times but as the previous reviewer stated it is a bit heavy on opinion and overall somewhat superficial. The book is actually a transcript of several lectures that Taylor gave for BBC some years ago, in which he briefly sketches a biographical portrait for each of the 5 "war lords" of World War II: Mussolini, Hitler, Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt. Each of these men, says Taylor, were war lords in the sense that they were solely responsible for the conduct of their respective wars. I will say that there is some useful insight into the mindset and modus operandi of the respective subjects. The book is very brief with each character only garnering 20-30 pages and this includes pictures on virtually every page. This book could easily be read in one sitting. The final chapter covers the various Japanese characters-there was no single war lord in their case-involved in their war-making process. If, like me, you are obsessed with WWII you might want to check it out but I can't say there is anything particularly outstanding about this book. 3.5 stars.

Taylor was one of the preeminent historians of his day and this is an example of his clear, concise writing. Using photographs not found elsewhere and describing the men who waged WWII, the reader will be surprised by the contradictions in character across the men Taylor calls the "War Lords".

Nice But Nonessential Little Booklet

If there was ever one thing A. J. P. Taylor was, he was the great controversialist and provocateur among 20th-century historians. (Need we mention his glorious "Origins of the Second World War," which still sets the "Establishment" fuming today, fifty years after its first print run.) He saw it as his mission to startle people, to make them think and ponder established "truths" anew. And clearly he relished that role, waving unconventional theses like a matador his red blanket and then verbally dancing in circles around the ferocious orthodox-historian bulls that came charging with incomparable (and very British) wit and charm. In these little essays he is more subdued than in "Origins" and some of his other works, but as unwilling as ever to fit into the "authorized version" of World War II.
Taylor paints each of his warlords significantly differently than we are used to from the pop-history press. Mussolini's portrait is perhaps the most conventional, showing both his great early successes and his later critical failures. Hitler he judges a generally very capable military as well as political leader, and doubts whether he truly wanted a great war. (There are echoes of "Origins" here.) Churchill is criticized for uneven leadership and military blunders, though overall his portrait is a sympathetic one. Roosevelt, Taylor believes, did not actually want war with the Axis powers, but fatally misjudged how far he could push them before they would retaliate. Stalin is shown in a more sympathetic light than is usual, at least nowadays.
Common to his brief analyses of them all is a familiar Taylorism, namely that they all made many more mistakes, and were much more "pragmatic" and less "ideological" in their motivations than is commonly assumed. Where others perceive carefully implemented plans spanning years or even decades, Taylor sees improvisation -- Sometimes brilliant, sometimes lackluster, but usually a "patch" for a momentary crisis rather than a deliberate stepping-stone toward the conquest of the world by Fascism/Communism/Democracy. (And given how politicians tend to work nowadays, one would think he is on to something here.) Thus, while concerned mostly with international politics and war on a grand scale, Taylor also in his own way humanizes his warlords, as he interprets them as very obviously flawed, fallible and uncertain human beings rather than distant and inscrutable kings far removed from their lessers.
The last chapter is about Japan, which had no dictator to rule it. This one is thus a little different, presenting more of a general history of the Japanese Empire in the Interwar and World War II years. Taylor is relatively sympathetic to the Japanese, pointing to the very real ill-treatment they had suffered from the West in general (and the US in particular) as essential in order to understand (if not condone) their own belligerence.
In the end, this is a nice little booklet to peruse if one has an hour or so to spend, richly illustrated with black-and-white photos. (Some of these I have not seen elsewhere, such as one showing Hitler visiting a bombed city, which he rarely did.) With mischievous Taylor at work, if not quite at his best, "The War Lords" makes an eminently enjoyable read. It is, however, in no way essential reading.
