Good book

Good book. Clara is a single mother who owns her own bakery and works hard to give her son the best life she can. She's stunned to get a visit from a lawyer who informs her that her son's father, a man she hasn't seen in four years, has died. And instead of being the beach bum she thought he was, he was a member of a very wealthy family, and her son has inherited his father's millions. Now she and Hank have been invited to New York to meet his family.

Clara is very nervous and not sure what to expect. She never knew her parents, and was raised in the foster care system. The Dunbarton's lifestyle is completely outside her comfort zone. It doesn't help that her son's uncle, while being her ex's twin in looks is totally different in personality. Her first impression is that he is a cold, ruthless workaholic who has no idea how to relate to her and her son.

I liked Clara a lot. She's a bit of a workaholic herself, but she works very hard to give Hank all the love and attention she never received herself. She's not sure what to expect from Grant and his mother, and is very afraid that they might try to take Hank away from her. As she gets to know Grant, she sees that there is more to him than she expected.

Grant took over running the family business even though his brother had been the older of the two. When their father died when they were kids, Brent went from planning to run the business when they grew up to becoming more irresponsible and child-like. Grant felt a great responsibility to the family legacy and gave up his own dreams to run it. He never plans to have a wife and family of his own, feeling that he is married to the business instead.

I loved seeing their relationship develop. It didn't take long for Clara to see that, in spite of his claims, Grant really wasn't happy with his life. I liked all the little things that she said and did to try to bring some happiness back into his life. She fought against the attraction she felt to him, knowing that nothing could come of it. It was pretty sweet to see the influence that Clara and Hank had on Grant, as he slowly began to see that his life was pretty empty. It was fun to see him loosen up as he talked to Clara about the fish in his aquarium, and lay on his back looking at the stars painted on the dining room ceiling. I ached for them both when Clara and Hank went back to Georgia, believing that the other didn't care the same way.

The ending was really romantic. While I wasn't entirely surprised by what Grant did, there were parts of his actions that were unexpected. I was especially surprised by what his mother did. The epilogue was really great.

I really liked Grant's mother. I had been afraid that she was going to be the type to steal Hank away, or cold and snobby to Clara. She did seem to go a little overboard with some of the things she did, but I loved the way that she embraced both Hank and Clara. There were times when she seemed like a big kid herself.

The story is about Clara Easton's life when a windfall comes her way after the carefree man who fathered her son (who was really a Park Avenue gold) has dies leaving his fortune to her son Hank. Now she's spending the holidays in dazzling New York City with the man's family, including his sexy twin brother Grant who is a real workaholic. But Grant Dunbarton is not like the fun-loving charmer who swept Clara off her feet. As time goes by Grant finds himself drawn to Clara and understands that she is not what she appears to be (a gold-digger). It is amazing how Clara opens Grant's eyes to what life is all about. A heart warming story!

Perhaps deceptively marketed

I went into The Incrementalists expecting a story about people who have "meddled" in important events throughout human history to achieve more favorable outcomes. While the novel mentions that its characters do such things, the focus of the plot is actually on an internal struggle amongst several of the group's leaders. It was like thinking you're getting Harry Potter but instead reading a story about an intrigue in the Hogwarts board of governors, who occasionally mention that some of the students are having grand adventures battling evil.

Ren is the ostensible reader's point of entry into the world of the Incrementalists, but the rest of the characters seem perfectly OK with leaving her, and thus, the reader, confused about many aspects of it. Speaking of the other characters, they are supposed to be hundreds or thousands of years old but are remarkably shallow thumbnail sketches -- this one knows about food. This one is slightly more intense than the others. That one plays poker and is preoccupied with romantic entanglements.

If you're going to give this book a try, I think you at least deserve to know what you're really getting into. The characters do very cool things -- we're told. What we actually see them doing, however, is stumbling through a rather haphazardly conceived, pedestrian mystery that has nothing to do with subtle manipulation of historic events.

An ancient secret society love story (3.5 stars)

The "ancient secret society trying to control us all" plot has been done to death, but The Incrementalists takes an unusual (although only partially successful) approach. The novel departs from the norm in two ways: it doesn't feature the mindless chase scenes that too often characterize secret society novels, and the secret society (or most of it) isn't malevolent or power-hungry like the typical ancient secret societies that tries to control us. While the novel's set-up is therefore promising, The Incrementalists too often reads like a romance novel. It isn't a trashy romance novel, but neither is it a compelling love story.

Phil is a member of the Incrementalists, an ancient organization that is modern enough to use email (@incrementalists.org). The Incrementalists strive to make the world a little better. Their tool is meddlework -- meddling with someone's mind to change his or her actions. Not only has the organization been around forever, so have its members ... in a sense. Incrementalists live beyond their deaths when their memories are absorbed by new recruits.

Phil recruits Ren to join the Incrementalists without telling her that she'll be absorbing Celeste, his long-time lover. Ren, on the other hand, doesn't tell Phil that she has her own agenda for learning the business of meddlework. But Celeste has an agenda too, leading to a plot that is filled with conflicting agendas. Another plot wrinkle: Celeste's last memory before her suicide (which should be stored in the Garden where the Incrementalists keep their collective memories) has gone missing.

Meddling is a subtle process, more an act of manipulation than control, and that's another departure from novels with similar themes. Whether meddling, however well-intentioned, is morally right or wrong is a strong theme that creates the opportunity for conflict among the characters, but that theme is underutilized. The plot focuses not on what the Incrementalists do (mostly they fret and quarrel without doing anything) but on an internal conflict within the group. That's both good and bad. It's good to personalize a story. It's bad (or at least disappointing) to set up a large moral dilemma without using it effectively. The story's background details are often more interesting than the story itself.

To a large extent The Incrementalists tells a love story, and like most fictional love stories, it runs a predictable course. It's different from most love stories in that the lovers are masters at manipulation, leaving the reader to wonder whether the love is real or induced by meddling. Unfortunately, that theme too is underutilized. Intrigue is added to the story by Phil's love of both Ren and Celeste (conveniently for him, they sometimes occupy the same body), but that love triangle is more interesting in concept than in execution.

In the end, while The Incrementalists is well-paced, written in capable prose, and often entertaining, it doesn't live up to its potential. The main story is too abstract while the love story is unexciting. I would give 4-to-5 stars to the concept but only 3 to the execution, resulting in a final rating of 3 1/2 stars.

A lovely secret history!

Secret histories work by adding something "big" to real history without disturbing it, often using the added thing to explain weird kinks in real history.

The Incrementalists are one of the biggest things I've seen added to history -- a secret society of 200 people, going back to the dawn of humanity, with memories going back that far but some turnover of actual people, that works for the betterment of the world.

But these days, they work only by making small changes, to make things a little better (there are hints of major disasters when big changes didn't work out in the distant past).

The near-immortality is fascinating. When an Incrementalist dies, they leave behind a "spike" in the memory garden; which, when applied to a living person, gives that person all the memories of the dead Incrementalist. Also, it makes *both* people share the body for a while; eventually, one or the other drops back to a minor background presence.

Except, when Phil spikes Ren with Celeste's spike, things don't go as smoothly as they usually do. Memories are sometimes missing, but come back later. Scary, and confusing (and very stressful for Ren, who agreed to take the spike so fast that she didn't get as much explanation as people are usually given).

They learn of some new possibilities of their powers, undiscovered for tens of thousands of years. They resolve character conflicts, and set up new ones. It's a great introduction to this complex world and its characters, with a nicely self-contained plot, and great big tracts of space for future stories.

I've been a fan of Steven's books since the beginning; this is my first exposure to Skyler's writing. I'm not anywhere near tired of Vlad or Dragaera -- but it's fun to see a fresh new world being laid out for us, too.

This excellent book is equally fascinating and useful for established costume designers and those new to the field, as well as anyone interested in the way costumes both contribute to the larger production and stand on their own as an art form. An award-winning and accomplished costume designer, Clancy uses her own insightful voice to clearly explain the history of the field (a topic often missing from costume texts) and the design process, and she illustrates the text with sketches and photographs of her own beautiful and evocative designs. For those with an excitement for costumes, or for theater and film in general, this book is a necessary addition to any library, private or public. As a designer myself, I expect to reference it often.

About the Author

Philip V. Bohlman is the Mary Werkman Distinguished Service Professor of the Humanities and of Music, and Honorarprofessor at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover, Germany. Among the awards for his wide-ranging publications are the Edward Dent Medal of the Royal Music Association, the Berlin Prize of the American Academy in Berlin, the Donald Tovey Memorial Prize of Oxford University, and the Derek Allen Prize for Musicology (for the first edition of Focus: Music, Nationalism, and the Making of the New Europe) from the British Academy, to which he was elected as a Corresponding Fellow in 2007.

Since its inception in 1900, Baker's has been the most enlightening and entertaining one-volume music dictionary available. In preparing this concise edition, Slonimsky slimmed down the seventh edition (1984) to about one-half its size, eliminating entries for music critics, theorists, librarians, church organists, and other secondary references. The remaining items have not been updated, though a memorial necrology through 1987 is included. Slonimsky's entries are generally shorter than those found in Grove's Dictionary , but his trademark droll wit and ironic observations more than compensate for the lack of detail. An essential purchase for libraries with small collections that do not already own the seventh edition.

The Concise Baker's

For those of us who can't afford the complete Baker'sBiographical Dictionary of Musicians, the Concise version is still agreat buy We have owned the 8th ed. for some years and use it very frequently. This dictionary has good clear information on not just the well known composers and performers, but many minor composers and performers as well. Like the complete ed., this dictionary includes jazz musicians. One of the best features of this book is that it not only has the biographical article, but has the composer's works divided up into the various types of composition, such as piano music, giving both titles and dates of compositon. A great reference tool, particularly for anyone wanting to find more pieces by a favorite composer, or a date for a piece already known. .
