Great book.

I had not considered Vertical Gastric Sleeve surgery when I went for my first appointment with my bariatric surgeon. I had assumed that I would have a RNY but after some discussion with her I agreed to do some more research on the subject. Well, little did I know that there just isn't a lot of info out there on this procedure. I have purchased another book that still had this procedure labeled as "experimental". I was glad to have come across this book as it answered a lot of questions for me. The author is not a clinition but an actual "Sleeve" patient. She gives good backround info that is backed up by her personal experience. If you are considering a Vertical Gastric Sleeve procedure than this is a good place to start.

The Sleeve is the best.

I had my sleeve surgery 12 days ago. Everything went good as long you follow your doctors and go to all the glasses. I went to classes from July 15th till my surgery in November. You learn so much and they give you a binder for everything. I have a girlfriend that we went together to the peer to peer classes, cooking classes, information class on how people will take you lossing weight even your best friends. After 12 days after surgery I was 274 and I now weigh 240. I waited for 13 years to get it due to congressed heart failure from a bad cold but now its done. I am 73 and feel great thanks to my Lord.

great book full of information

I wish I'd found this book at the beginning of my weight loss journey. I started reading it one year after surgery. I felt like I was reading my own story, so much great information, and right on track of what is gonna happen before during and after weight loss surgery. I recommend this book to all those seeking weight loss surgery.

Anthony T. Kronman is Sterling Professor of Law, Yale Law School. Since stepping down as Dean of the Law School in 2004, he has been teaching in the Directed Studies Program at Yale and devoting himself to the humanities.

reviving secular humanism

This book is, in short, an argument for reviving a curriculum in secular humanism in undergraduate studies. He begins with the argument that purpose of college is to encourage the young student to ask the the big questions on the meaning of life. He seems to believe that there are sufficient numbers of adults working in colleges today who have an interest and ability in doing this. He also does not appreciate the emergent spiritual values inherent in the study of the sciences. It is an interesting book (along the lines of Allen Bloom) advocating a restructuring of higher education that will never happen.

Fills a lamentable gap

Professor Kronman's book fills a lamentable gap in the literature pertaining to higher education, to the extent that most of what is written on higher education today is rather empty. This is the kind of book that a thoughtful person, having finished college, would come across and, after having read it, would realize that they were utterly misguided in their undergraduate career. That being said, I feel the book should be required reading for anyone considering graduate school regardless of the field of study. His analysis of the "modern research ideal" seems to me right on. I would, however, agree with some previous reviewers that the book could have been shorter, and at times I found myself painfully aware that he was making a point he had aready sufficiently made. Nonetheless, the final chapter is quite profound and alone worth the cost of the book.

Yet, as a side note I find it striking that no mention of St. John's College in Sante Fe and Anapolis was made in the book. The "great books" programs at Yale, Columbia, etc simply cannot begin to compare with that of St. John's College. This omission is difficult to reconcile considering that the author sees the "great books" tradition and its secular humanism as the best way out of the current education crisis, and, quite simply, no other college or university better represents secular humanism than St. John's.

Education's End - Putting the Big Rocks in First

While reading Education's End, I was reminded of a story (frequently attributed to Steven Covey) involving a one-gallon, wide-mouthed Mason jar set on a table, about a dozen fist-sized rocks, a bucket of gravel, a bucket of sand, and a pitcher of water. The speaker carefully places the rocks, one at a time, into the jar. When the jar is filled to the top and no more rocks will fit inside, he asks, "Is this jar full?" Usually, an audience says yes, but then the speaker successively adds buckets of gravel, sand, and water, each time impressing upon his audience the jar is not full. Finally, he explains the lesson from the demonstration: if you don't put in the big rocks first, you'll never fit them in.

Education's End by Anthony Kronman, former Dean of Yale Law School, is an excellent analysis--I highly recommend it--of a critical issue that affects the framework of American society. A thoughtfully planned and carefully balanced argument about the role of the humanities in education, Education's End exposes the current shortcomings in higher education. For Kronman, the big rocks--the things of value--in education are the questions: What is the meaning of life? How should we spend our time? How can we succeed in the art of living? For much of our history U.S. education included the big rocks; they were part of a college education. Today, this is no longer true.

Kronman reviews what he believes to be an unfortunate path traveled by higher education in the U.S., breaking down the regrettable history into three eras. First, during the antebellum era beginning with the opening of Harvard University, there was a focus on God, a Christian perspective, and an emphasis on "the ancient model of virtue and order." Second, during the era of secular humanism following the Civil War, there was a focus on family and country, and an emphasis on "modern ideas of individuality and creative freedom." And third, during our modern era, there is a focus on political correctness and the research ideal. The research ideal places an emphasis on research that restricts scholarship to a narrow field of specialization, and it requires publishing something new with the understanding that any contribution will be superseded.

Chapter 3 (The Research Ideal) is excellent, but Kronman is really just beginning his critique. In Chapter 4 (Political Correctness), he skillfully, but tactfully, slays the three-headed monster of modern political correctness: diversity, multiculturalism, and constructivism (post modernism). After explaining why the natural and social sciences are better able to survive in the current environment, he peels away the layers of misguided intentions that appear to support political correctness exposing the problems for the humanities. For example, discussing why multiculturalism is unacceptable, he explains how "an internal dialogue" carried on by each succeeding generation of thinkers and authors throughout western history offered a unique teaching opportunity that is unavailable in other cultures. Highlighting the weaknesses with each aspect of political correctness, Dean Kronman argues that the status quo short-changes teachers, denies students, and deprives society of a value previously enjoyed during the era of secular humanism.

Kronman's arguments are frequently understated, but this book is nothing less than an indictment of how the humanities are taught today: we prepare students for careers, but not for life. Also, he does more than just lament this failure today to ask the big questions. He blames the academy for abandoning a trust respected during the era of secular humanism that it carried forward until the 1960s, keeping alive a continuity--through the humanities--of teaching a curriculum that reached back to the classical era. He explains that this tradition of arts and letters continued a legacy that allowed students to see themselves as a participant in the "great conversation." As part of that squandered inheritance, Kronman notes the diminished role of the humanities in education today. In the past, humanity teachers felt qualified and confident enough to guide their students through questions about the meaning of life and about how to spend their lives. Unfortunately today few, if any, humanities professors feel it appropriate to ask or instruct on the big question.

These are fun to read

I love Odds...he is what a cat would be if the cat could talk(at least mine never do)
I do get irritated at Margot a bit...she is a bit clumsy for her age,
and tends to whine a bit, but all in all her character is developing nicely....growing as it were as she learns to do for herself as a newly single woman.
I look forward to the next book of the Margot and Odds story
And highly recommend this new series to others who like mysteries and cats.

The only reason I gave this 4 stars is because the series have only about 100 pages per book. Regardless of the length, I have enjoyed all three books. Some very quirky characters and very strange cat named Odds, make these books fun. The cat amazingly, cat talk but only to Margot his owner. Margot, Nancy, and Odds the cat solve mysteries.

Amazing gift, tons of things you can do with this!

This is a really fun book to read, a typical Dr Seuss treasure. I purchased this book for my daughters first birthday party and had all of the guests write well wishes and notes for her to read as she got older. Now when she reads the book she has these lovely messages to remind her of how much she's loved and it made her first birthday that much more special!

I am a HUGE fan of Dr. Seuss books. I ordered this book for my sister's baby shower. It was a reading theme. I thought this would be the perfect book for a sign in book. It worked out perfectly. The book is normal size, not small like most Dr. Seuss books. I was super excited about this because it gave us more room to sign names. It is the original Dr. Seuss book with the beautiful illustrations! This book is now an amazing keepsake for my unborn niece or nephew! Every time my sister reads it to him/her she can remember all of the people at her shower. Great book for all ages~

Exciting and fun, can't wait for more.

I was given an advance copy of Snake Heart so that I could offer an honest review. Here it is: I love it! For all of Lindsay's Emperor's Edge fans, the complete The Swords & Salt Collection, Tales 1-3 (Swords and Salt)series offers a peek into life on the Nurian continent. Young Yanko White Fox, a hard-working young man and aspiring mage, learns the difficulties and dangers inherent in the politics of a troubled nation.

He is eventually forced to step up to protect the Empire and his family. In Warrior Mage: Chains of Honor, Book 1, we saw Yanko flee the violence that leveled the family's mines, and then leave the familiarity of home to travel across the vast and daunting oceans in search of a vital artifact. Along the way, Yanko picked up teammates he is not entirely sure he can trust, then runs into his mother – the infamous pirate, Snake Heart. While she is a powerful mage and has much to teach Yanko, he doesn't trust her, and must temper his fear of the mother he barely remembers in order to succeed in his mission.

Honestly, I find myself holding my breath until each new book in all of Lindsay's series comes out. The The Emperor's Edge Collection (Books 1, 2, and 3) series got me hooked, and I have truly loved every book she sends our way. Snake Heart offers swashbuckling adventure complete with heroes and heroines, brigands and buccaneers, and of course sea creatures. This book is exciting, and I was so disappointed when I turned the last page. Now I'm holding my breath again to learn what becomes of Yanko and his people.

A Great Sequel That Surpasses The First

This book truly takes what the first one established and propels it to another level. Even though it's been a while since I read Chains of Honor Book 1, the characters all felt familiar and even like old friends. The world as a whole feels well thought out and well developed thanks to it's ties into her main series, Emperor's Edge, but even without that connection it would still feel like a real place.

I cannot wait for the third book so we can find out what's going to happen to our protagonists!

I do want to warn people that it ends in a cliff hanger. I see too many bad reviews on books because of this.

Another great Buroker book

One of the great things about Lindsay Buroker is consistency. It doesn't matter which of her books you pick up, it's going to be good, and SNAKE HEART is no exception. The only reason I can think of NOT to get this book is if you haven't yet read the previous books in the series (the "Swords and Salt" collection followed by Chains of Honor 1: WARRIOR MAGE). If that's the case, get those first. (Although if you CAN'T get them for some reason, go ahead and get this anyway. The author does a great job of reminding you of what you need to know from previous books when you need to know it, without slowing down the current action for those who've already read them.)

In SNAKE HEART, Yanko is looking for the Golden Lodestone, a magical artifact he hopes will lead him to an empty continent, one that could provide his country (Nuria) both with room for their people and a way for them to grow enough food to feed themselves--all without having to go to war. But there's a complication: one of his traveling companions is a Turgonian, who would rather have the Lodestone for his own country. Another is that a different faction of Nurians--one that wants to find the continent in order to *continue* the country's warlike tradition--is also racing to find the Lodestone.

Yet another complication is that Yanko finally meets his mother, the infamous pirate "Snake Heart" Pey Lu. And it seems that SHE'S after the Lodestone as well--and is probably more concerned with obtaining it than with the welfare of the son she abandoned as an infant. . . .

Very worth the read if you love true Alchemy

For the true lover of the Art of Alchemy highly recomended See what true adepts thought to be important in the 1500 s . I found it truly inlightning. The translation is worth every penny thanks . Have seen other translations but this one is better fewer mistakes. Only one important thing was left out the symbles that were in the original are missing big mistake to leave them out. would have been nive to have more of the origional pics
