If you like the cover, worth the read...

Wonderful array of prints and fabrics, coloured with personal and travel photos, textile-making pics and cultural peeks... Of course, John Robshaw himself is the main focus here: his evolution from art student & painter to both explorer and plumber of the world's textile possibilities is rather fascinating.
A well-received NYC artist, Robshaw slowly deconstructed his initial gallery efforts towards connecting with his primary inspirations, bringing his ideas on design pattern and effect to fellow artists & artisans in India, Southeast Asia, Columbia, etc. He can be largely credited with creating not only designs, but a textile design trend seen almost everywhere today. In a kind of dignified/retro neo-coloniallism, Robshaw seeds and harvests renewable cultural riches to bring to new-world, high-end markets. The book describes this journey, where the result is a kind of Roman trading, where everyone prospers.
Garnsey does a good job of piecing together Robshaw's life, travels, and painter-to-entrepeneur experiences into a general overview, allowing the fabrics, collections and photos of artisans to speak for themselves. Downside, the prints are matte, so there isn't as much depth to all those marvelous colours as some might like to see (a gloss-print version, while impressive, would certainly be very expensive). Otherwise a pleasurable, easy read for lounge tables, and a place-holder for design library shelves as well.

Great read, not a lot of interiors, though

I loved reading this book and learning how John Robshaw ended as the master of textiles that he is. He recounts his journey from art student, world traveler, and the many experiences that eventually led him to his beautiful line of textiles.
In this book you will learn a bit about the different printing techniques he uses and get a kick with all the travel anecdotes he weaves into the story.
I don't think this was intended as an Interior Design book, so the section dedicated to this is not very big.

The best resource for Medicine Clerkship.

This book is probably the best resource available for the medicine clerkship. It is concise and well written. It is divided up into three sections. The first is a discussion of 26 of the most common presentations that beautifully illustrates how to put together your differential diagnosis. This first section I found was extremely helpful when seeing patients on wards or in clinic for the first time. It helped me ask the right questions to patients in order to come of with the most likely diagnoses. It is also remarkably helpful for the shelf exam since maybe 40% of the vignettes deal with these presentations. The second section discusses specific diseases in more detail. Again, these are very well written, with many helpful tables. Nearly every chapter has flowcharts for the management of patients with that particular disease. Since there are many "best next step" questions on the shelf exam, this is very helpful. The last section discusses common topics in ambulatory medicine, such as low back pain, dyslipidemias, and screening and prevention topics. This is very helpful as well since there are always a handful of questions on screening and prevention. Online, there are 34 additional chapters, most of which are useful enough (i.e. likely to appear on the shelf exam) for you to read. There are also a few videos, EKGs and CXRs with explanations of significant findings.

As you can see, there is a ton of stuff this book offers, but really none of it is beyond the scope of what could appear on the shelf exam. Except for the few chapters on psychiatric issues, this book was clearly written to help students like myself not just pass, but ace, the shelf exam. And it excels.

I preferred this book to Step-Up to Medicine (Step-Up Series), the most popular choice for medicine clerkship. Obviously people love that book, but I found the outline format too bothersome and prefer prose when delving into a topic for the first time. Step Up's information on diagnosing and managing conditions could use some work as well. For example, under the "diagnosis" section of many diseases, it would give a laundry list of findings for every diagnostic method under the sun without stating the test of choice. Very annoying.

Another popular book is Internal Medicine Essentials for Clerkship Students 2. This is from the ACP and is definitely the most authoritative book written for clerkship students. The problem is that it only covers the bare essentials. I actually did read a few chapters and found them to be a quick recap after already learning of the topic in hand. If you wanted to use this, I would recommend reading the appropriate chapters after having read the material in another book like Kochar's.

I read most but not all of the material in this book (I didn't find out about this book until a few weeks into the clerkship). I also did MKSAP For Students 4 (MKSAP for Students,Alguire) and got through maybe half of the internal medicine questions on USMLEWORLD. I just took the shelf exam today and felt like I was well prepared for it and would recommend this book and the mentioned question banks to anyone who wanted to do well on this clerkship.

Kochar Clinical Medicine for Students

I only wish i knew about this book sooner. No mistake about it, this IS the bible for all medical students. This would have been perfect for preceptorial sessions and case discussions but i only just found out about it and bought it toward the end of my clinical rotations. Still this is what i will be using for my Step 2 CK. Its only a hundred pages (more or less) more than Step up to IM, but cases are presented in an organized and logical manner. In a way it reminds me of Harrison's, just not two volumes long. The first sections deals with symptomatology and how to approach patients dealing with common presenting symptoms. It also gives an excellent differential list WITH a rationale. This is something most books do not have. The second section is about specific diseases arranged according to organ systems. Although this book does not offer the intricate details for patient management that an internist might be more interesting it. This book provides all the necessary information about internal medicine catered to especially for students. However, personally i think this book isnt just useful for students, its can me used by residents and even attendings as a quick review. This is definitely one of the best books i've ever owned and one that i will be going back to again and again.

Nice book

I used this book for a class I took in differential diagnosis and found it to be quite useful. It had information that wasn't in the Lange Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment, which was the main text for the course.
The only problem with the Kindle edition is the lack of an index with page numbers with hyperlinks (there are no page numbers) so you're forced to resort to using the application search function, which can bring up a distracting number of hits if you choose the wrong search term.

I find it difficult to really slam this book but I cannot recommend it either. The book looks good with nice big pages, glossy cover, color charts. It is also well written and gets its points across well. The information is very good, presented well and important but it is just too remedial. There is not an original thought in this book. If you are anything other that a rank novice there is little to be gained here. The information here is important stuff to know but anyone who has ever traded generally understands about support, resistance, breakouts, and trends. Using them across multiple timeframes is also a very basic concept.

If you know nothing at all about the basics of trading this book is very good and I would recommend to those readers. But if you have any experience at all with a basic knowledge of remedial technical analysis there is nothing to be gained here.

you have to be kidding

I purchased this book based on a mention in "One Good Trade" (which happens to be an excellent book). I can only surmise that "Bella" (author of One good trade") is friends with this author. The book costs 82 bucks and at least 90% of it is so basic that you could read it online for free-I rarely feel ripped off but this book is a ripoff and reading the simplistic comments really ticked me off-for ex: "Moving averages are the most commonly found technical indicator on charts" and this brilliant insight "Once broken, resistance tends to act as support" If this is news to you, get the book. He also copies (but also credits to be fair) Weinstein's 4 stages of trend cycles. It's almost as if we are reading a beginners notes as he reads through the basics of technical analysis-all of it is true, but what is this author adding? Answer??! - use lower timeframes to better time your entry into higher timeframe trends. There, now send ME $82 for that idea and read the section on technical analysis for free on wikipeadia and investopedia.

Using technical analysis techniques to understand market dynamics and structure

I decided to buy this book based on favourable recommendations I read elsewhere and because I'm in the process of educating myself about various aspects of trading.

In this book, Brian Shannon, a trader with many years of experience explains probably more clearly than in any other book I've read, why technical analysis works, and how to do use it to develop understanding and insight into markets, and ultimately an edge in trading. For reference, Brian has been involved in markets since 1991, has worked as a broker, owned a day-trading firm, managed a hedge fund, ran a proprietary trading desk (where he was also the most profitable trader of that firm) and have taught thousands of traders world-wide with his involvement with MarketWise, a training firm.

Perhaps the first thing to say is that this book is not a canned "system" that you simply learn and use, although the material covered has a bias towards trend following systems and the material obviously will help in building a trend following system of your own if that's your goal. I would opine that this book should be essential reading for anyone who have an interest in trading the markets as a trend follower, particularly if you're a novice.

The primary topics covered are the 4 stages that stocks go through, namely accumulation, markup, distribution and finally decline (as popularized by Stan Weinstein) and how and why this happens and how this is evident from a price chart, support and resistance and how to properly identify and use them (including various related topics like why support turns into resistance and vice versa and the psychology of participants in the markets), trends and how to identify and use them to identify the highest probability trades including stop loss levels, profit targets and consequently risk/reward ratios, volume and how to properly use it, moving averages and how to properly use them (hint: not as timing indicators for entry but rather as "a visual reference point to which price can be compared in order to identify trends and market structure."), the role of time, how and when to buy or sell short, news and fundamentals and how this should influence your risk/reward rules, short squeezes - what they are and how they happen, a chapter on risk management and strategies, a chapter of collected quotes, rules and general trader wisdom to ponder and internalize, and finally a chapter on "putting it all together" where Brian explains how he uses all these elements in his own daily and weekly trading regime. Regarding the topic of risk, I feel I should add that the topic of risk management is actually weaved throughout the entire book, even if there's a dedicated chapter on it. As Brian says in the introduction, "The number one job of a trader is that of risk manager." Very true and essential to understand/internatlize if you want to make a success of trading.

The book itself is a large (A4) hardback book printed in colour, comprising 184 pages. The print is easy to read and well spaced, making it easy to underline and make notes in the borders. I bought my copy through a third party seller (booktrader88) who gave excellent service and packed the book very well using multiple bubble wrap packages, delivered via DHL.

Refreshing and thought provoking! May just reset your life :)

I was going through a hard time in my life before I found this book. My wife left me for Rand Paul's campaign associate, my cat died in a gardening accident, I was posting vain gym selfies to Facebook, and I could never find my socks. I couldn't make sense of anything. Worst of all I was listening to Billy Joel and James Taylor. Then I found Prof. Damante's book. Wow! Suddenly, I wasn't worried about all the small things. Truth brings true care, and lifts you to your best trip. Prof. Damante has made a stunning achievement in philosophy, musical theory, and literature. Having read this book, I am now a better person. Thanks for the read.

A very inspiring book that digs deep into the way we are trained to think about the unknown without really putting in the time and thought. It makes you really question your surroundings while expanding your thought process to more than what you're used to doing. Mixing psychology, science, and punk rock of course, you are taken into a fun journey of the mind and why/how we come to believe what we do.
