Practical and Political Guide to Staying Healthy

From the political to the practical, this straight-talk guide by conservative talk show host and epidemiology/nutrition guru, Dr. Michael Savage, PhD., gives us a nice summary of the many fails of today's public health and NIH services, magnified by the porous U.S. border policy of Barack Obama. That's just getting started. From there, Dr. Savage hones in on more immediate health advice with detailed chapters on nutritional and preventative aspects of protecting and bolstering your immune system, selecting the proper foods, and common sense approaches from washing your hands properly to choosing the right supplements and vitamins. (I chose a different toothpaste, for example, after reading this eBook.) I think your family and loved ones would benefit from the knowledge Savage clearly compiles here and it is not a burdensome read, but quite reader friendly. This being a Kindle product, it is helpful that there are hyperlink references within the book that will take you to Internet sources for additional study. Professionally done, as is everything Michael Savage puts his hand to.

Brilliant! So much God in one book!

A very large and absolutely fantastic collection of contemporary spiritual writing put together by Lucinda Vardey. If you are interested in modern interpretations of God from EVERY religious and spiritual point of view, this is a great, BIG, introduction to a huge number of authors. Apart from anything else, you could save yourself a huge amount of time and money by buying this book!
Lucinda Vardey has divided the writings into 6 sections: The Quest, Revelation, Trials, Surrender, Death And The Etrernal Life, Awe, and sub-divided each of these sections into another 3 or 4 sections. I was already familiar with a handful of the huge number of masterful contributors, such as the "non-guru" Krishnamurti, physicist and Eastern mystic Fritjof Capra, rebel priest Matthew Fox, Zen writer Alan Watts, Christian and Narnia legend C. S. Lewis. But after intitial introductions through reading pieces in God In All Worlds, I went on to purchase or borrow books by holocaust survivor Viktor E. Frankl, Gary Zukav and Ken Wilber.
Several years after being bought this book, I am still occasionally dipping into it and discovering some new perspective on who or what God may be. Thank you Lucinda.

Lucinda Vardey's anthology of contemporary spiritual writing has been a gift to me since I received it in 1996, the year my son died of AIDS. I found so much healing in the words contained in this book and have used as a meditative tool and confort since my son's death. I espceially liked her chapters on death and on awe.

Truely the most important Book I have ever read

This is a Bible of the 20th Century. Lucinda Vardey has compiled what I believe is the most comprehensive spiritual and religious writings of the most enlightened Men and Women of the past 100 years. I believe that our age has produced the most educated,wise, and experienced religous people in a millenium. The table of contents is a who's who of every religion's most respected scholars, poets, priests, monks, rabbis, ministers, sufis, and leaders and philosophers of this century. From Anglicanism to Zen, no religion is ignored with the most repected writers from each included with simple sentences, to a paragraph, and some are a half dozen pages. Arranged in chapters of spiritual processes and religous passages of Faith, one can open the book and begin anywhere and never stop reading it.

I have an app that is close to being ready to submit to the app store, except that I never dealt with the fact that it needs to run on multiple devices. This book is a good fit for me - as auto layout is specific to my challenge. What I *really like* about this book, is that it is so readable. A lot of books of this nature are not well written, and are often hard to follow. Mr. Lipton writes like a real person talking! Also he has a web site - [...] - and is responsive to, and helpful in, emails!

Good introductory walkthrough, with distracting spelling and grammar errors

Good points - this is a good, very basic walkthrough of Autolayout, with some tips that don't appear in the other two I've looked through. I disagree with K James's assessment - I knew nothing about Size Classes or Stacked views before reading this, now both are quite clear and easy to use.
Bad - I read the Kindle version, which is full of spelling and grammar errors, one screen shot completely missing, one control that is yellow but the book says to click the green icon, and one screen shot in which the control that is referenced in text and is supposed to be shown in the screen shot is completely missing from the screen shot. It makes the book look like it was rushed to press, where a casual proofreader could have caught all these.
Suggestion - This is intentionally an introductory book, but it would be helpful to have more on how constraints interact. For example, how do setting the leading and trailing space constraints interact with a maximum width constraint? The "priority" doesn't seem to work for this.

One tip - when I read this book in the Amazon online reader, it is not rendering UTF-8 characters correctly. You might want to check how you uploaded this. It looks like it was submitted as UTF-8 and is rendering as ISO-2359-2. But it doesn't detract from the effort.

Dreams and a capacity for hope

The author’s impressive credentials enables him to combine evidence from psychology, neuroscience, anthropology and evolution to show how dreams aren’t just a bit of undigested beef, but can be studied scientifically and are deeply rooted in the origins of world religions. The first clue in what is known as the cognitive science of religion lies in in the fact that the word for “dream” in almost every culture is related to their word for “seeing.” Even for blind people, dreams involve the same part of the brain that is related to vision.

Bulkeley’s particular emphasis is on big dreams, the really vivid ones that stay with us, provide a picture of what troubles us the most, and have the power to change our lives. They appear in times of acute crisis or mortal danger, as he shows in his case study of the second century martyr Perpetua. Having converted to Christianity, this young woman broke Roman law and was sentenced to death in the lion arena. She kept a journal of her dreams, which eventually enabled her to find the courage and hope to face what was coming. Thankfully, most of us won’t experience this kind of trauma, but most of us face our own lions every day. The author shows how big dreams are evidence of the capacity for hope and imagination beyond the present, sometimes very grim, reality.

Bulkeley points out the close neurocognitive connection between dreaming and meditation, and how important meditation is in many world religions, including Buddhism, Islamic Sufism, Native American religion, and Christianity. Meditation techniques are even taught nowadays in corporate board rooms and hospitals. That’s because it works. It eases fear, increases intentionality, and enables our consciousness “to freely explore the farthest reaches of its own latent abilities.” Wow.

As a pastoral minister, I agreed with the author when he mentioned which religious groups—not entire religions, mind you, but certain groups within them—have trouble with taking dreams seriously. He also, surprisingly, shows how dreaming actually gives birth to skepticism. When someone wakes up from a big dream, they immediately wonder what it means, and how it relates to the everyday world. “This question,” Bulkeley says, “echoes throughout human life as a conceptual template for critical thought and reflection. I could not have formulated my own ideas without the help of skeptical questions.”

The book ends with a dream reported by Charles Darwin, which, as I thought about it, could have been similar to one Jesus of Nazareth might have had. Both were facing serious resistance from religious authorities, a family less interested in their ideas than seeing them properly settled, and physical suffering. And the dream, even for an atheist like Darwin, had an unmistakable resurrection motif.

As a fantasy author, I found this study of big dreams inspirational. Dreams, meditation, myth, spirituality—all help people “see.” And this kind of vision, it seems to me, is inherent in the best of the fantasy genre. Reading good fantasy might prepare us ordinary people for a deeper life—maybe even for the far-reaching life to come.
